Man of Steel vs. Dawn of Justice – CGI Overload or Plot based Action?
With the resounding success of The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight trilogy, it was only a matter of time before these two Goliaths were set head to head. Announced way back in 2013 during the San Diego Comic Con, Dawn of Justice is set to debut in 2016. We have been bombarded with regular updates regarding the extremely anticipated movie as well as baseless rumors. This also includes whether the new installment will try to match the CGI effects of the former. However, let’s separate the grain from the chaff and see what we know for a certainty from the leaked trailer.
Even though the people at Warner Bros have yet to reveal an official plot of the movie, we can glean a lot just by going through the movie’s trailer. Apparently, it seems as if Superman is literally worshipped as a God or as one woman puts it, people are focusing on what he can do rather on what he should do. In other words, the man of steel is pretty much a very controversial figure in this movie. It is also apparent that he needs to be put down a notch and who better to do it than the caped crusader, Batman.
Henry Cavill is set to reprise his role as Superman and will be placed in quite a conundrum. On the one hand, he has to live with the fact that he killed someone (his enemy Zodd from Man of Steel) and leveled Metropolis at the same time. However, he also has to contend with the adulation/hate of the masses who see him as a God now. Ben Affleck has already been chosen to play Batman, to the chagrin of diehard fans of the dark knight, but the jury is still out as to how he will depict the anti hero.
We can only guess what will happen when these two forces collide, but perhaps the CGI overkill that was Man of Steel, would be sufficient to capture the action. Critics have criticized the movie for its over the top CGI effects that take more air time than the actual storyline and the fact that there is no character development whatsoever.
Since the script was written by David. S Soyer, who also incidentally, wrote the script for The Dark Knight, we do not know whether movie goers will be faced with the same boring affair. Perhaps the superhero faceoff might benefit from the CGI overload that the Man of Steel was notorious for. However, if it comes in the way of character development then the creators will really have something to cry about.
