The End of Thor in Ragnarok?

As Ragnarok, aka Thor 3, is set to hit the big screen on May 5th, 2015, fans of the Marvel Universe (both comic and its cinematic counterpart) are on tenterhooks regarding the fate of the hammer wielding superhero. However, some, like this blogger also weep as we hear that Chris Hemsworth is going to leave the franchise after the movie as his contract comes to an end. Yes, this also includes Infinity Wars.

Rumors that since Robert Downey Jr. had extended his contract to play Iron Man in other movies besides and after the Avengers, Hemsworth would do the same might be false. Whether we laugh or cry in disbelief, fans of the Norse superhero and/or actor will likely have to console themselves as there will be no Thor 4!

For those who are unaware, Thor 3 will stand witness to the end of Asgard, home of the Norse Gods and possibly Thor as he confronts his (oh-so-evil, yet adorable, half brother) Loki. The second part of the title, ‘Ragnarok’ is actually a term that harks way back in Norse mythology and has an apocalyptic connotation. In laymen’s terms, Asgard may be destroyed in this part.

According to the trailer, Loki will also team up with the villain and incidentally, one of the most infamous baddies of the Thor multi-verse, Surtur, also known as the Fire Giant to wreak havoc on Asgard.  No wonder their home went to pot! It is also speculated that the third part will also explore Loki’s character and his past in more detail, but at this point, that is still conjecture.

The anti-hero will be portrayed with the villains, but he will have a major turn of heart when he sees the home he grew up and was nurtured in, start to fall around his ears. Teaming up with his half brother, he will fight and defeat the smoldering giant, but viewers and fans alike will also get a glimpse of why Loki turned evil in the first place. This includes why he loathed his adopted family and especially his father, the late ruler of Asgard (who he killed himself in Thor 2), Odin. Perhaps he will finally allow his brother to take his rightful place as ruler of the realm as well.

To keep things spicy, the people at Marvel have a habit of connecting different plot points in multiple movies belonging to the same multi-verse. The same can be said of Thor 3 and the third installment of the Avengers. As every fan knows, the Norse God is the only one who can take on Ultron head to head. However, in one scene we see the latter choking the living daylights out of the former! Methinks this could have repercussions in Thor’s final installment, but we will let the movie elucidate as it comes out this May.
